Ardrey Kell's 44-21 win over Ballantyne Ridge on Friday, Oct. 16, pushed the Knights to 5-3 and all but locked them into the NCHSAA 8A playoff field.

Playoff projection models from CarolinaVarsity give Ardrey Kell a 100% chance of making the 24-team 8A bracket, with a projected seed around ninth. The Knights sit 16th in the MaxPreps 8A division ratings at 49.90, trailing Providence (52.90) and Laney (51.00) among mid-tier contenders.

Ballantyne Ridge, now 3-5, still carries a 99% playoff probability in the larger 7A field, where 48 of 60 teams qualify. The Wolves project as roughly a 19th seed, according to CarolinaVarsity's Week 9 simulation.

Seeds one through four earn a bye in both brackets.

Rodriguez, Dailey power the Knights' surge

Ardrey Kell's offense has been rolling. Quarterback Noah Dailey threw for 195 yards and four touchdowns against Ballantyne Ridge, according to MaxPreps. Receiver Khylieb Rodriguez caught passes for 140 yards and all four of those scores.

Rodriguez has averaged 2.7 receiving touchdowns per game over his last three outings, up from 1.0 per game across his previous 16, per MaxPreps. The Knights have averaged 46 points during their current two-game winning streak.

Providence looms large for Ballantyne Ridge

The Wolves' playoff math gets tested Friday, Oct. 23, when Providence (4-4, 3-0 Southwestern 7A/8A) visits at 7 p.m. The Panthers have won three straight, including a 41-21 win over East Mecklenburg and a 23-22 upset of Palisades, which was ranked No. 16 in the statewide Super 25 at the time.

A Providence win would give the Panthers at least a share of a second consecutive Southwestern conference title, the Charlotte Observer reported. For Ballantyne Ridge, a loss would drop the Wolves to 3-6 and could push their projected seed deeper into the 20s.

Neither Ballantyne school cracked the statewide classification polls released after Week 9. The Charlotte Observer's rankings, co-sponsored with the News & Observer of Raleigh, featured 11 new teams across all polls this week. In 8A, Hough (8-0) held firm at No. 1.

Ardrey Kell travels to East Mecklenburg on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The Knights are 2-1 in Southwestern 7A/8A play and sit third in the conference standings, per MaxPreps.
