Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center's emergency department has earned a national accreditation for specialized care of patients 65 and older.

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) granted the hospital its Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation, Novant Health announced Thursday, Aug. 27. Level 3 is the bronze tier in ACEP's three-level program, which also includes silver (Level 2) and gold (Level 1).

The designation means the ER has demonstrated it can address the physical, cognitive and social needs of older adults. ACEP data shows accredited geriatric emergency departments have lower hospital admission rates and fewer repeat ER visits, according to the announcement.

That matters here. ACEP estimates 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 65 every day in the United States, according to the organization's accreditation program page. That demographic wave drives higher demand for emergency departments equipped to handle multiple chronic conditions, medication risks and social challenges common among older adults.

Angela Clarkson, nurse manager of emergency services at the Ballantyne hospital, highlighted the team's collaborative approach.

"By working collaboratively across disciplines, we can better address medical, social and functional needs while helping patients maintain their independence and quality of life," Clarkson said in a statement.

Joy Greear, president of Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center, said the recognition reflects daily work by physicians, nurses and team members to meet the needs of patients and their families.

To earn the Level 3 designation, emergency departments must show they provide care addressing the physical, cognitive and social needs of older adults through enhanced processes, staff education and coordinated resources.

Three other Novant Health emergency departments hold the same Level 3 designation: Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, Novant Health Rowan Medical Center and Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.

The geriatric accreditation adds to a string of recognitions for the Ballantyne hospital. Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center earned Gold Heart Failure and Gold Plus Stroke recognition from the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines program in August 2026. Greear received the Department of Defense's Patriot Award on Aug. 4 for supporting employees who serve in the military.
