Lidl is pulling a gelato product from shelves in North Carolina and other East Coast states after lab tests found Listeria bacteria in a sample.

The voluntary recall covers one lot of Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces, a 16-ounce container sold at Lidl stores between July 19 and Oct. 15, according to an FDA recall notice. Lidl announced the recall Friday, Oct. 16. WSOC-TV reported the recall Sunday, Oct. 18.

No illnesses have been reported, the FDA notice stated.

The recalled gelato was distributed to all Lidl stores in North Carolina, along with stores in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. North Carolina shoppers who bought the product at any Lidl location in the state should check their freezers.

How to check your freezer

The affected product is packaged in a clear plastic container with a brown lid. Shoppers can identify the recalled lot by checking the bottom of the container for these markings:

  • UPC: 4 0564897 22458
  • Lot number: 085261
  • Best-by date: March 26, 2028

Routine quality testing detected Listeria monocytogenes in a lab sample, prompting the recall, according to the FDA notice. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. The FDA notice also stated that the infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Healthy adults may experience high fever, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

What to do

Customers who bought the gelato should throw it away or return it to any Lidl store for a full refund. No receipt is required.
