Ballantyne residents can flag dangerous intersections and road conditions through a new regional traffic safety survey open through Sunday, Oct. 25.

The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) launched the survey on Monday, Sept. 14, as part of an initiative called "Safety is No Accident." Residents across Mecklenburg, Iredell and Union counties can share feedback on existing conditions and safety concerns at SafeStreetsForUs.com, The Charlotte Weekly reported.

The survey is Phase I of a multi-phase effort to build a regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program is funding the study, which covers all 24 CRTPO member jurisdictions, Iredell Free News reported.

The region's crash numbers underscore why the CRTPO is seeking public input. A presentation to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Committee on May 19 reported more than 250,000 crashes across the three-county area between 2021 and 2025, according to the committee's agenda packet. Roughly 2,600 of those were fatal or serious injury crashes. Pedestrians and bicyclists were identified as disproportionately affected by the most severe collisions.

Will Snyder, a CRTPO project implementation planner, said the agency wants to hear from the people who use these roads daily.

"We want to hear directly from our communities about what they are experiencing so we can develop a plan that reflects the real safety needs of the CRTPO planning area," Snyder said.

The study covers Charlotte and surrounding Mecklenburg County municipalities, giving Ballantyne-area residents a direct channel to report problem spots. Public input from Phase I will help shape the strategies in the final safety action plan.

Additional phases will follow the survey, though no timeline for Phase II has been announced. The CRTPO is targeting early 2028 to finalize and adopt the completed plan, according to the May 19 planning committee presentation.

Residents can take the survey at SafeStreetsForUs.com through Oct. 25.
