Charles DeLoach, 33, will join the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners as its youngest sitting member after Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

DeLoach, a Democrat and civil litigation attorney, is running unopposed for the District 5 seat covering much of south Charlotte, including Ballantyne. He would replace Commissioner Laura Meier, who announced in November 2025 that she would not seek reelection. The current board's youngest member is Commissioner Leigh Altman, at 54.

The Election Hub's Rachel Black first reported the profile in The Charlotte Ledger. DeLoach told The Election Hub that not having a commissioner "with my specific experience of raising children in the year 2026 … I think has left a bit of a blind spot."

He sees that gap as personal. DeLoach is a husband and father living in Charlotte who said younger generations face financial pressures their parents did not.

DeLoach announced his campaign on Nov. 19, 2025. Later that day, Meier said she would not run again, noting "there is a whole younger generation out there that are waiting to make a difference." She endorsed DeLoach several days later.

DeLoach grew up in Wilmington, attended Elon Law School and UNC Law School and settled in Charlotte full time in 2023. He co-founded CLT Engage, an Indivisible Charlotte affiliate, and serves as a regional vice chair for the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party.

He told The Election Hub his main priorities as District 5 commissioner will be affordable housing, childcare and healthcare. The profile did not include specific policy proposals on those issues.

Early voting in Mecklenburg County runs through Saturday, Oct. 31. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
