Ballantyne homeowners and business owners have until a Sept. 15 public hearing to weigh in on the appraisal standards Mecklenburg County will use to set 2027 property tax values.

The Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners received the 2027 Uniform Schedules of Values, Standards and Rules at its Tuesday, Sept. 1 meeting and scheduled the hearing, according to the county's revaluation update. The schedule of values is the official appraisal manual the county assessor uses to determine property tax values.

As we reported Sept. 2, the county's initial review of 428,506 residential and commercial parcels shows a median 15% increase for residential properties and a 30% increase for commercial properties. Those are countywide medians; Ballantyne-specific figures have not been released.

The numbers are preliminary.

Assessment staff in the Office of Tax Administration will continue reviewing properties through the rest of 2026 before final assessed values are posted and mailed to owners in early 2027.

Check your property record card

Before those values become final, the county is urging property owners to check their property record cards at Reval.MeckNC.gov and flag any errors. A mistake as simple as an extra bathroom listed on a record can inflate an assessed value, the county said.

Ken Joyner, director of the Mecklenburg County Office of Tax Administration, said at the Sept. 1 meeting that the county conducts revaluations every four years, more frequently than the eight-year minimum North Carolina law requires. "That keeps the property values closer to the market values, reducing the likelihood of large, unexpected increases, and helps residents stay informed about the process," Joyner said.

What comes next

After the revaluation, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and town elected officials will set tax rates in the spring. Those rates will apply to the new assessed values. Tax bills will be calculated and mailed during the summer.

The Office of Tax Administration is also scheduled to present revaluation updates to several municipal boards this fall, including the Pineville Town Council on Tuesday, Sept. 8 and the Matthews Board of Commissioners on Monday, Sept. 28. A presentation date for the Charlotte City Council has not been set.

The Sept. 15 hearing time and location have not been confirmed. Residents can visit Reval.MeckNC.gov for updates and to review their property records.
