Tryon Medical Partners is hiring new physicians at its Ballantyne office and across its Charlotte-area network as the independent practice expands capacity in specialties it already offers.

Lindsay Muns, CEO of Tryon Management Group, the organization that manages Tryon Medical Partners' operations, said the practice is adding staff in sports medicine, skin-cancer surgery and cardiology. Muns described her mandate as an effort to "supercharge" growth while keeping the physician-led model intact, according to The Charlotte Ledger.

She pointed to Charlotte's booming population as the driver.

"The fact that the greater Charlotte area continues to add people of all different ages from all different places gives us a huge opportunity to continue to grow," Muns said on The Charlotte Ledger's podcast, published Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The Ballantyne location at 16817 Marvin Road, at the intersection of Marvin Road and Ardrey Kell Road, already offers cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and primary care sports medicine. Dr. Dallas McCorkle, a board-certified family medicine and sports medicine physician, is accepting new patients there.

Two more physicians are listed as joining the practice in September, according to the practice's website. Dr. Kimberly D. Houghton will join the gastroenterology team at the Ballantyne office. Dr. Joann Journigan, a Vanderbilt University School of Medicine alumna specializing in cardiology and women's heart health, will practice at the SouthPark location.

The growth comes eight years after 88 physicians sued Atrium Health, then known as Carolinas HealthCare, alleging the hospital system used non-compete restrictions to block them from practicing independently. That lawsuit settled in July 2018, and Tryon Medical Partners opened its first two clinics that September, according to a N.C. State Treasurer press release.

The practice now counts more than 100 physicians. As of October 2024, it served about 200,000 patients across 10 clinics, North Carolina Health News reported. Its website now lists 15 locations, suggesting the footprint has grown since that count.

In September 2024, Tryon Management Group finalized a deal giving San Francisco-based private equity firm TPG a stake in the practice's business operations, covering billing, human resources and technology. The clinical side remains 100 percent physician-owned, according to North Carolina Health News.

Muns, who joined Tryon about a year ago from US Radiology Specialists, framed the expansion against a market dominated by Novant Health and Atrium Health. Tryon's Ballantyne office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with same-day and next-day appointments available in person and virtually.
